why should I use WordPress instead of [Music] Squarespace I’m Joshua Fields Milbourne I’m an Emy nominated and New York Times best-selling author and this is how to write better welcome back to our series called how to start a blog over a decade ago I started theminimalists.com with my best friend Ryan Nicodemus and I’ve learned a lot of lessons along the way throughout the series we’re answering your most frequently asked questions so drop your questions in the comments below today’s question is about where should I write my blog is it Squarespace or WordPress or any of these other sites and ultimately it comes down to those two big choices why should I use WordPress instead of Squarespace well truthfully I don’t care what you use but today I’m going to talk to you about why I use WordPress over any other place now it feels like we hear about Squarespace on every podcast episode we listened to but when you compare Squarespace to WordPress you soon discover what I discovered WordPress is Superior in several ways now well Squarespace isn’t a terrible option it lacks the personal control that’s available with WordPress this is why every serious blogger I know uses a WordPress blog I’m going to talk about five reasons WordPress is better than Squarespace number one design or themes Squarespace provides some beautiful templates but they’re pretty limited by the number of designs that are available since WordPress is a free open-source blogging platform there’s an ecosystem of tens of thousands of themes ready to satisfy every design need that you have number two features or plugins while Squarespace has a rich feature set no blogging platform can compare to the immense scale of features that WordPress offers WordPress has a library of over 54,000 free plugins that can handle any task while I suggest that you keep the number of plugins on your blog to a minimum the level of customization provided by WordPress is unmatched but plugins aside one key feature that’s built into WordPress but not Squarespace is Version Control Version Control tracks your changes and allows you to compare revisions and revert back to a version of your page or post at any point in time I use this feature all the time because I know that if I’m unhappy with anything that I’ve changed on my blog I can quickly revert back to the previous version this feature provides a fail safe that allows bloggers to compose draft edit and publish their posts within WordPress itself making it a complete blogging solution reason number three you own your content this is really important to me because owning your own content means you have full control over what you express on your blog you also have complete access to take that content and use it anywhere you wish you see WordPress provides tools to export your data for use on any hosting provider that you choose with Squarespace you could never truly download a complete copy of your server files or database but with WordPress you can create an exact replica of your blog at any point in time this is most valuable for maintaining backups or in case you choose to restart a Blog with a new hosting company with WordPress you have 100% ownership of your content your files your data your design and everything can be backed up reason number four search engine optimization or SEO out of the box both WordPress and Squarespace are search engine friendly but with a single plug-in WordPress elevates your SEO a plug-in we recommend for every blogger is something called yoast SEO you can read more about yoast SEO at theminimalists.com blog now this free WordPress plug-in allows deep customization of your onpage SEO but more impressive it provides automated content analysis this helps guide you to improve and optimize your content for better readability and improved reach in all search engines well SEO isn’t everything we all start our blogs in hopes that people will actually read what we’ve written right well following proper SEO practices can be a differentiating factor in reaching new people reason number five growth WordPress is extremely robust and customizable it allows you to build a Blog exactly the way you want it built but what happens as your new blog grows well if you outgrow the off the shelf option maybe it’s time to work with a designer to create a fully custom website that get tailored to match your brand and image since WordPress provides you with complete ownership of your platform it also provides a designer with the freedom to build and create your blog design without restrictions with WordPress nothing is off limits if you’d like to read more about how to start a blog head on over to theminimalists.com blog for my complete blogging guide we’ll see you next [Music] video
