you know blogging is a great way to build SEO but where do you actually put the keywords in the blog that’s what we’re going to talk about today if you didn’t watch my last video on how to write a blog post for SEO you might want to start there so that you know how to actually write the post this video is going to be about where you put the keywords in the post to optimize it for Google so here we go as a reminder before we jump into where the keywords go it’s important to know why we’re using keywords in the first place so Google scans your website including your blog post to determine what the pages are about so that they can serve the best search results to the person searching when you use keywords and phrases that people would often type into the search engine to find content like yours you’re signaling to Google that your content is relevant to them in other words you’re helping Google understand what your content is about so it can show it to the right people online now let’s talk about where to use those keywords in your blog post so that Google knows what your content is about the first place you’re going to use the keyword or phrase is in the title or H1 this example I’m using is from my website and the keyword phrase here is how to repurpose content so you’ll notice that I used it here in the title the second place you want to use it is within the first 100 words of the blog post and then naturally throughout the body of the blog post when I say naturally I mean you don’t want to stuff it in there you don’t want it to sound robotic you want it to sound like that’s just naturally how you would phrase the sentence so it should make sense it should be compelling that of course is more important than shoving the keyword in there you’ll see how I used it here it’s natural in the sentence learning how to repurpose content is going to save you a lot of time money and hassle it doesn’t sound forced or like I just shoved the keyword in there the next place you’re going to use it is within the subheadings so that is these secondary headings under that main title where I used it we’re going to scroll down is right here how to repurpose content again it sounds natural in the freezing of the subheading how to repurpose content for blog posts doesn’t sound like it’s forced uh and that is the key to kind of using it properly in the subheadings the next place you’re going to use it is within the last 200 words of the blog post so we’ll scroll down within the conclusion you’re going to want to try and use the phrase if possible again fit it in there naturally not like you had to force it the next few places that we use the keyword or phrase are actually on the back end so this is at the back end of Squarespace looks like if you were posting a Blog on Squarespace this is what the back end looks like so you’re going to use that keyword or phrase in the SEO title how to repurpose content so what’s the difference between an SEO title and the title of your blog post the SEO titles which shows up on the search engine so when we Google how to repurpose content this is how it would show up on Google that’s the SEO title um and then this is the description you’ll want to try and use it in the description you don’t have to but why not uh it’s just another way to make sure that people understand what you’re talking about and again if the key word um or phrase doesn’t Naturally Fit in the description then you don’t have to force it but that is another place to use it so that’s all under the SEO tab on Squarespace this will look different depending on what platform you’re using to publish your blog but this is where you put it for Squarespace the next place that you’re going to use it is actually in the URL so on Squarespace that’s under the content tab we’ll scroll down here and you have the post URL so you’re going to want to use it in the post URL this is what shows up um in the search bar at the top of your web browser uh it’ll have you know whatever.com in my case it’s Sarah jeanbirth.com and then slash blog slash how to repurpose content so you’ll see that we used that key word phrase there as well another place that you can use the keyword is in the image alt text so again on the back end you can put image alt text here it basically helps the uh people who have visual impairments understand what the image is so you can use the keyword phrase there again it’s more important for us to be helpful to the person who has the visual impairment telling them what the image is of then to try and shove the keyword in there so use it there if it makes sense before we go I just want to make a note about keyword stuffing so back in the early days of the internet when Google was first becoming a popular thing people would stuff their website content with keywords so that they could show up on Google and a lot of times it wouldn’t make sense it was just like word salad but because the keywords were there they’d show up in Search and hopefully somebody would buy from them well the Google algorithm has gotten a lot smarter over time and keyword stuffing is not only illegal by Google standards but it is also just not effective so don’t force the keywords in there use them naturally for the most part the keywords that you’re going to find have you know the right volume will be keywords that you can use naturally when talking about the topic so now that you know where to put the keywords in the blog post to make sure it’s optimized you can start writing content that’ll help you get found on Google if you you want to learn more about SEO I do have a free training called WTF as SEO you can get it at the link in the comments and that training is going to take you through the basics of SEO
