so you want to write blog articles i’m a blog writer and i’m here to help you hi how’s it going my name’s luke and i am a content writer i work full-time writing blog articles and website content for clients and i’m here to help you today to write your first ever blog post even if you have written blog posts before this video will help you out so please watch until the end step number one so for this video step number one is going to involve me making a pretend business i’m going to pretend that a client has come to me with their business and they want a blog article written this particular business is one that sells pet toys and products the brand is called pet treats or patrice depending on how you want to pronounce it honestly it took me a few minutes to come up with this logo in canva and i quite like it i think this could be a legitimate business obviously in your case the business will already exist but for this example i wanted to create something that wasn’t just about myself but now the business has been established you should identify what their main selling points and goals are in the case of pet treats they sell customized pet toys and products along with a pet grooming service all available from your home step number two you should be conducting all your research on the competitors of that business very early on in the blog writing process before you even start constructing any content you should look at what competitors in that industry are doing not only in your country in your area but globally since i’m based in the uk i’m going to pretend that this company is set up in birmingham and i’m going to look at other pet product services in that area you have to imagine that this business is actually thriving and surviving in that area this means that they will be competing with other customers for the same or similar product so to do that you literally just open google maps and just look at other companies in your area that have the same keywords now obviously to write a successful blog post you are going to need a computer i do all my work from here from my laptop and you can do it on an ipad on a tablet computer whatever you have now before i get into the actual research and writing part of this video i do want to make a quick disclaimer it’s everybody’s favorite corner it’s disclaimer corner welcome back so it’s worth noting that in this video i am not going to teach you how to make a website or i’m not going to teach you how to actually post the blog article make it live if that is something that you’d be interested in i will happily discuss it but that is not something that i am actually that well versed in myself i just write the content obviously a large part of writing content is understanding how it will look on the final web page and that is a part that i will be touching on in this video a blog article and website content are two very different things and i will explain what i mean by that difference later on in the video finally everything that i say in this video is my own personal opinion and works for me there are many blog writing tips and videos that you can see on the internet and if what i say in this video doesn’t help you hopefully one of them will with that said let’s get back to the video once you have established your industry or niche you should start doing research into competitors in your local area and across the country there is no standard amount of time that this should take and to be honest it is an ongoing process so i’ve spent a bit of time now looking at competitors in the birmingham area and i’ve found two main things really firstly at least from a google standpoint there aren’t many pet product independent services and there aren’t many pet grooming services there are way more pet grooming than there are pet product services but that’s probably just from a manufacturing standpoint it’s a lot easier to supply pet grooming than it is to supply customized pet products so i realized that i have created a very unique and niche business which is good because it looks like this market isn’t over saturated and that is definitely one thing that you should be looking at and considering when you start writing blog articles for businesses you should start thinking about how saturated that market is if i were to make a blog article today about how to grow your social media following that is a very popular topic and it has been covered a lot so for me to make anything worthwhile that would stand out from the competitors i would have to write about something that is completely new and unheard of so if i were to write about pet products instead there’s a lot more there’s a lot more leeway now when i say that blog articles and website content are two different things what do i mean a blog article isn’t selling the company it is promoting an idea it is discussing an idea website page or a landing page is the website and the company itself where you promote the services and you try and get people to actually phone up and book an appointment so in the case of this article i’m not trying to promote pet treats it’s just the website that it is hosted on so i’ve now finished the research on competitors and that is helping me guide the keywords that i’m going to put in the article if you don’t know what keywords are that’s completely fine i didn’t know what they were at one point so i’m going to explain them to you very simply keywords are the search terms that people will be looking up on the internet that can then direct them to your article the more that you begin to read around a certain topic or blog you will realize there are certain keywords that are googled and searched more than any others so in the case of pet treats and this blog article i’ve already started to realize some of the keywords that are popping up on different pages okay so here we have my google sheets document which i like to use to keep track of all my keywords that i have been finding on various other articles that are on a similar topic but of course outlining the blog article is just as important so at this point you should come up with a title and what the sort of general feel is and the entire point of the blog article what question are you answering so i think for this particular blog article my title is going to be why are pet toys really important one thing that you can do when you have started to decide on a title for your blog article is hop over to google trends if you’ve never used google trends before it is a fantastic way to understand and see how often a search term is being looked at by people all over the country not only can you go country by country you can of course look at the entire planet and you can look at certain search terms over certain periods of time so for example christmas related search topics are only going to be googled more often around the christmas period and then you will see a decline through the rest of the year this could then help you decide on your title and other things that you should be putting in the article writing a blog article is like writing a story and every good story needs a structure if the blog article was talking about the top five things you can do this summer to feel less lonely then the article has to establish what you will learn take you through each step and lead to a natural conclusion the ultimate goal of writing a blog article is to get it shared on facebook and instagram and twitter and speaking of sharing have you seen the small share button if you haven’t already so now that i’ve just sort of decided on a structure and i’ve done my research into google trends and keywords here are my subheadings do our pets really need pet toys different types of pet toys taking the toys away at some point you actually have to reach the writing part of a blog article now for me sitting down and writing isn’t actually that difficult i’ve always been a fast typer and on good days i can write like a thousand words in an hour that isn’t to say that i’m always writing a thousand words an hour because sometimes it is much less than that and if you want to be a blog writer you definitely don’t have to write that fast but you do need to be efficient of what you’re doing now although my workflow is unique to me it may not work for you so i haven’t gone into great detail about how it is i work but hopefully you’ve been able to learn something so far when you write a blog article it’s never about the amount of words it’s about how engaging those words are so although i’m writing a thousand words an hour that doesn’t mean there’s a thousand words are actually engaging for an audience to read because you need to achieve and tick two boxes when you are writing a blog one you want to appear in search and two you want to keep them scrolling if you are writing a blog article and it is just full of keywords but there’s no actual good humanly written content in that blog no one’s going to keep scrolling now of course we don’t have any control over what things are going to blow up and get views because i have had videos on this channel and on my tic toc that have just blown up more than i thought they would have otherwise and the exact same can be said for blog articles sometimes an audience won’t find content as engaging as you thought and they’ll find other articles more engaging than you ever could have hoped for but once i had my subheadings decided and the title was there and i knew where i was going with the article i started writing now for me i like to flick between a lot of different tabs when i’m writing which is why i have a second monitor if you don’t have two monitors and you are working from an ipad or a laptop then i recommend splitting your screen in half on one half of your screen you’ll have the content that you are writing and on the other half you will have the tabs that you are flicking through the other competitors if you will this means that if you do reach writer’s block which will probably happen to you you are not just stopping completely you are researching and reading still which will then spark something else in your brain i didn’t want this blog article to be too long in particular in my head i had pretended that the client had come to me and said we want it to be approximately a thousand words and obviously depending on how you work if you are freelance you will charge differently for this sort of price but if you’re just working by the hour then it doesn’t really matter once i had gotten the blog to a point that i was happy with i decided that it was done so at this point if you were writing for yourself you would just publish the blog as it is but if you’re writing for a client you would send it back to them and get their input every single practice and process is different depending on how you work where you work and who you work with now i don’t want this to be the sort of video where you can’t get access to the blog that i have written because i feel like that is the most helpful thing is to actually see the end result so i won’t bore you by reading it all out
