today’s video is one of my favorite videos of the entire year and it’s also my most popular video that I film every single year without a doubt how to start a blog in 2024 I have the blog by Sophia Lee and I started it when I was 19 years old I was in my college dorm room and since then in the last 5 years I have grown it to be a multiple 7 figure business which is pretty insane and there are certain things that I’ve done along the way that have escalated me into growing my blog a lot faster and then some things that I look back and I’m like why did I do that and so in this video I’m going over the things that I wish I knew when I started my blog and the things that I wish I didn’t do so that you can start the most successful blog possible in the shortest amount of time and turn it into a business that makes money let’s get into the video okay so I have a list of all of of my top tips I recommend going and watching my previous videos a lot of these tips are the same every year but of course with how the internet changes so much things are also changing and I think it’s just interesting to watch how some of my feelings have evolved with some things because even though like I said I do keep a lot of the same opinions some things are completely different than what I thought before so we’ll have all of my prior videos linked below along with like income reports oh my gosh I think think my first income report was like $600 and now just last week I can’t believe I’m saying this out loud just last week we made $113,000 in one week which is just absolutely crazy so here are my top tips okay first one aim to post two times a week this is a steadfast rule that I basically followed since I first started my blog the thing I will say about posting is that you need to be consistent so for me two post was The Sweet Spot I was able to sustain that while also being a college student I could not sustain five posts so that was too much for me and I find that with a lot of the people that are in our courses or in our Facebook group or just other bloggers that I talk with two blog posts a week are the sweet spot if you can only do one blog post a week then just do one blog post a week but you want to make sure that you are doing that blog post every single week you don’t want to do two blog posts one week five blog posts the next week zero blog post the week after you want to make sure that you can do two two two two two or one one one Whatever It Is stay consistent with the blog post for me like I said two blog posts a week was my sweet spot when I was first starting and it was just me keyword research in SEO this is so huge and I had not even ever heard of those terms when I first started my blog you have to know what SEO is that is literally the most important part of about blogging and something I mean I have SEO go through my head probably at least every 3 hours so if you don’t know what SEO is it’s search engine optimization and there are certain things that you need to do within your website within your blog post on your pictures Etc so that Google or the search engine you’re using can appropriately see what you’re writing about and therefore rank your post higher and show it to more people so there is so many things that you can do within SEO um there’s so much information on it on Google on YouTube video or um search for specific videos and SEO my slight plug but again there’s so many free resources but um my first course perfecting blogging goes over our entire SEO strategy and everything we do from like a website front a page in the actual blog post on the pictures um Etc moral of all of this you need to be so familiar with SEO and right attached to SEO is keywording so if you know what SEO is you’ll know what keywording is too these will literally Skyrocket your business so much we do not just go and post random things on our blog I do not wake up this morning and go today I’m going to post something on winter jackets no like we are doing SEO research and we’re doing keyword research to make sure that everything we’re posting about are things that people actually want to read and um we can rank faster essentially that if that’s a whole lot of mumble jumble to you go research it and you’ll make if you know what keyword and keywords and SEO is you’ll understand what I just said if you don’t you’ll have no idea go research and you’ll learn it’s it’s like really gamechanging for your blogging business third one oh my God I harp on this one all of the time and it is so important and I really have stuck behind this for the Last 5 Years there are so many social media platforms out there and I know when people start their blog they think that the only way for them to be successful is for them to be on every single one of these social media platforms I completely go against that and I think that the only social media platform that you should be on the first year of blogging is Pinterest Pinterest is the only social media out there that you specifically go on to go to people’s websites for example the other day I was looking at mac and cheese recipes I immediately went to Pinterest I searched Mac Ma and cheese recipes and I found the mac and cheese recipe I wanted I clicked on the picture and it took me to someone’s blog on Instagram or on Tik Tok you know I can search that but then like what are they going to have it in the captions do I then have to go copy the URL bring it into Safari like there’s so many more steps involved that people usually don’t follow through with it and so Pinterest is just such a powerful tool Pinterest is the most important thing for you to get on the fastest way that you’ll make money on your blog is by by getting into an ad agency and to get into an ad agency you have to have a certain number of page views so I personally am in the media Vine Ad Agency to get into media Vine you have to have 100,000 page views a month the fastest way to get page views is by Pinterest um and then once Pinterest starts ranking you and getting your post up more people go to your website and then Google will be like wait a minute all of these people are going to this website we should start ranking them too and it’s just like a faster way to escalate people going there instead instead of you know you posting you starting an Instagram and you posting on your story okay like let’s say in the beginning you have 100 followers what one of them two of them your mom and your sister are going to go click on the link like I just think about me personally it’s pretty rare for me to click on someone’s story link and then search their website but on Pinterest I’m constantly clicking into the pictures going on people’s websites and then I’ll you know stick around when I found the mac and cheese recipe I also started looking at her other one pot meals etc etc so focus on Pinterest and really use that to promote your blog that’s like the fastest way that you can get page views and therefore then get into an ad agency Ad Agency okay so then we have number four so this one is slightly contradictory and if you are just starting I fully stick behind just get on Pinterest but it would be crazy of me not to mention how powerful short form video is right now even when you search something in Google they’ll show you a short form video um YouTube shorts obviously huge Tik toks massive Instagram only showing real so if you are at the point where you’ve been blogging for a year you have your Pinterest set up for you’re getting consistent page views you know SEO then I would start testing out short short form videos Tick Tock especially in my opinion I mean you can have you can have a video go viral and get it in front of hundreds of thousands of people when only having like 10 followers um so I find that Tik Tok is so huge for us Tik Tok is like one of our it is our biggest marketing tool and it’s insane to me how much it does for the business they actually flew me out this summer to talk on a panel which was such a pinch me moment but I when I first started Pinterest I kind of was like this is a waste of my time like it’s another social media I don’t have time for this like blah blah blah it has completely transformed my business and helped it grow so much so if you even you if you think you have the time but you’re just starting your blog don’t start a Tik Tok or an Instagram or whatever just start a Pinterest but if you’re a year in and you’re like okay I can handle this like I understand the other things then that’s when I would start a Pinterest or start a Tik Tok all right my fifth tip is all about goals so I am a huge goal setting person I mean it is literally what gets me out of bed I am constantly setting goals and I am very devoted to accomplishing those goals so for me when I first started my blog short-term goals were really really huge as long as long-term goals but or as well as long-term goals but the short-term goals were really what set me up to completely like get my blog where I needed to be um so I think that sitting down writing a list of all your goals is so powerful if I was in your shoe starting a blog my first goal would be to set up a self-hosted WordPress blog you want a self-hosted WordPress blog you do not want a h hosted blog I use a analogy all the time that a self-hosted WordPress blog is something that you own like a house you own it or hosted WordPress blog is something that you rent and you could really get kicked out of there so when I started my blog my host was blue host I still heavily recommend them they have great customers service they are by far the most inexpensive I always say like Bluehost is the Walmart version and then you have um and then you have like the target version which is what we’re on right now so that is big scoots or big Scouts I still haven’t figured it out I think it’s big scoots um and then you have the Nordstrom version which is like your own host of sorts so we started on blue host we were on there for 2 years then we started to get so many more page views that started to get slower so then we had to switch to Big scoots but I mean we pay like this year we paid $7,000 just in hosting with big scoots where on Blue Hose we paid like $24 a year so obviously there’s a huge difference of course when I went on a big scoots I was making enough money where that made sense to pay for that um but then you get on your own hosting platform oh my God that’s like hundreds of thousands of dollars so the important thing is is that there’s different levels of host if I were you go on blue host they work with white they work with WordPress so if you get a self-hosted WordPress blog it will have everything that you need in there and that’s the first goal that I would have okay then second goal would be to set up your website do not hire a website designer I am very Pro spending the least amount of money as possible when you first start your blog to make sure that you actually stick with it so I love WordPress templates that you can find on Etsy there are so so many different ones we specifically recommend some and I have a whole blog post going over our favorite ones that you can find in the description um but you can find ones from $10 all the way up to $300 and everything in between and they’re so cute and they will make you look like you have a professional website without spending a lot of time on it then my next goal after that would be to start a Pinterest and my goal after that would be to take a blogging course again we have blogging courses but we there are also so many good blogging courses I’m So Pro blogging courses I swear that me taking blogging courses was the reason that my blog was able to grow so fast cuz instead of me trying to figure something out for six months straight I would be able to take a blogging course from someone who was already very successful with it Implement their strategies and then once I figured it out how it worked I would be able to adjust those strategies to work for my Niche um so we have perfecting blogging which is goes over all of our SEO then we have perfecting Pinterest which goes over over our Pinterest strategy and then we have perfecting email which is like the most complicated one don’t even focus on email until you’re like 2 years 3 years in but um perfecting email goes over how we handle our email list and our strategy with that so those are the three courses that we have again there are so many courses out there if you’re going to research it look for a course with SEO look for a course that goes over Pinterest and then maybe like another social media course that goes over you know whatever social media platform you’re looking at and then look into email so that’s the goal that I would set after that and then um the last goal that I would set for your first year is to get into an ad agent or I guess I guess the second to last one would be to start writing posts do not wait to publish them get them published right away so they have the most amount of time to rank and then the last one would be to get into an ad agency so having I think what that was six of them five of them maybe having those those those would be my first list of goals for you and it really will give you a nice you know ranking of what you should be focusing on on things that are actually like important to starting a blog that makes money next up is something that is really good to just keep in mind as you continue to grow your blog and that is to get your eggs in different baskets so this is something that was really apparent to me when we were going into 2020 and there were some bloggers who fully relied on Amazon Associates income um or Amazon like affiliate income and all of a sudden one day we all the bloggers woke up to an email from Amazon saying that we we lowered your commission from 8% to literally I think it was like 1% maybe it was 3% but it was something that was more than 50% and it was drastic and there were some bloggers who who would literally support their entire families from this Amazon affiliate income and their income went from you know $5,000 one month to literally like $1,000 and you can’t That’s pretty drastic so from there I learned the power of okay like you can have the big players but you can’t fully rely on the big players so in my blogging business we are very very very Diversified out debatably almost too Diversified out but I know that if Amazon went to slash their prices which they did that I am 100% fine I know that if um Tik Tok was to delete my profile I have other things to back me up that people follow me on um so this is just really important and for me I am not a huge risk taker and so to know that I am okay and then everything okay for the things that I don’t have control on is so important and especially I mean in everything of course you want your eggs in different baskets but especially with blogging and all of the algorithm changes that are occurring all the time I would highly recommend that you just keep this in your mind and you are strategic about the different Avenues of Revenue and just viewership you have coming through following that one I am a huge tester I test test test test test everything I say this in all of our courses all the time I am constantly testing things from the color that I have my Pinterest images to the orientation to the sizes to how I start my first sentence in my blog post to the font that I use um to what time of the day I post my content I mean literally I am constantly testing everything to see what works and what doesn’t work now this is where bloggers freak out is when algorithm changes are happening and people will want to they’ll be on Pinterest and their Pinterest is great Pinterest does an algorithm change which will happen to you if you start a blog it happens all the time and their stats will go from being great to being terrible and they freak out they literally think their blog is over and that everything is terrible and then they change their entire strategy even though we are constantly testing all the time we do we never completely change everything that we do we choose one thing to change we’ll test that usually we’re testing that for like 4 weeks sometimes we test it for 2 weeks but then after that amount of time we can pinpoint okay did this one thing that we changed affect anything did it make everything better did it make things worse did it make things neutral and then we could move on if we were to just change everything we would have no idea what would happen and I think this is one of the reasons why we have really never been affected massively by an algorithm change is because we do not change things majorly and we really have suck I would say 90% to the strategy that I created the first year there’s nothing major that we’ve really changed even with all the algorithm changes which I think is something just to think about because you know none of the algorithm changes have really affected us so much so research and test but also be mindful when researching and testing that you are being very strategic with with the amount of changes that you’re making so that you are able to go back and pinpoint okay did this actually make a difference or not prioritize your Roi so Roi is return on investment and especially the first year you’re going to want to think about this all of the time so I chose my first year I was so busy I was a full-time college student I was also working I was paying for school on my own I had very limited time that I could spend on the blog but I also treated it very very seriously and I knew that I need to be specific about what I am focusing on and only focus on the things that I will get a return on investment from again me getting on Pinterest and me getting page views was an automatic return on my investment because I was able to get into an ad agency that could start paying me creating my about page I’m not making money off of that so to me that was not important I probably spent an hour putting together my about page I will sometimes hear people who spend like a week putting together their about page that doesn’t make sense to me because you’re really not going to make money from that whereas like if you spent a week writing blog posts and getting Pinterest pins published you could have one of those blog posts go viral or all of them go viral for all we know and then get into an agency 2 months later um so that is something that you should just definitely think about is in my opinion you should not be sending time doing something that won’t make you money in the future we’re nearing the end okay invest wisely so in the blogging world people obviously make so many so much money from so many things do not I mean do your research like seriously do your research on all of the courses read YouTube comments on how the courses are read reviews um for products that you buy for your website do research and make sure that that is something that is is worth spending your money on cuzz a lot of the time I see things promoted and then I’m like okay that like thing sucks or whatever it is so definitely research and make sure that everything you’re spending your money on is a good investment into your blog and then my last one is to find your community when I first started my blog I got into Facebook groups um some of the Facebook groups that I got into were through courses that I took our course has a Facebook group that you can get into into some of them were free I think the ones that you that come with of course are better than the free ones cuz the free ones can just get so bogged down with just like cuz it’s free so anyone can get in but that was my people the first two years of blogging and my friends had no idea what I was doing they didn’t understand and so I couldn’t ask them questions where if I had a question on how something worked or I needed an opinion I would post it in the Facebook group that I was a part of and they would be able to help me out and oh my gosh did they help me out so much and so having that Community to ask questions to complain to um to ask opinions for is literally huge and will make this blogging Journey a lot less lonely and that wraps up my how to start a blog in 2024 video this is truly one of my favorite videos to film every single year and it’s the most popular video we put out so I no and I hope that you guys love this one just as much it really is interesting to see the things that I still stay on behind when I talk about what I would do and the things that have changed and there’s just I mean oh my gosh I can’t say it enough there’s so much strategy that goes into starting a blog it’s not something that you can just whip up one day and become successful you really have to think about the different steps that you’re taking how you’re handling it what type of research you’re doing where you’re investing your time I mean so many different things and there’s a lot that I wish that I knew when I first started my blog so again I hope this was helpful make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel I put so many videos out there on all things blogging definitely check out our courses I am biased and I think that they are so good but I also am constantly seeing the comments in the videos we get emails of people just saying how it’s the best course they’ve ever taken that is so appreciative oh my gosh sometimes comments can be so mean like on my Tik Tok sometimes comments can just be brutal but I can count on the blogging video comments to always be so nice so thank you so so much and I will see you at next week’s blogging video
