a voiceover related question that I’m often asked is where can I find voiceover scripts I mean that may be possibly the all-time asked question that I’ve received regarding voiceover well in this video I’m going to talk about where to find practice groups it’s easy it’s simple but it’s extremely important where you find them and it and a little bit later on the video video I’ll explain exactly minutes to talk voice over my passion as a voiceover coach is to help you learn all aspects of voice over because it used to be you go back not so long ago the advice that you would receive would be you know you need to get practice to be a great performer then you get a demo then you get an agent and then you audition audition audition and then get more coaching to be a great performer audition that is just one part of the equation today today you have to be your own audio engineer you have to be your own business operator and marketer as well as a performer and my goal is to ultimately help you be profitable to make money so that you can keep doing this and make it a full-time Endeavor live the lifestyle you know that you want build your own business now is that easy no it’s not easy building a business is not easy however voiceover is probably one of this as a former business consultant is one of the simplest business models I can possibly imagine um so hang around we’re going to talk about a very important aspect of that which is practice Scripts have you ever had trouble finding practice scripts have you ever wondered where they’re at where who’s hiding them why are they so I assume people must think they’re difficult to find because I can’t believe the number of times I’m asked about about uh practice scripts now if you’ve done a little Google searching chances are you’ve stumbled upon scripts that are labeled as such voice over practice scripts and I won’t name specific places but they’re like there’s a studio that provides them there’s a voiceover auditioning platform that provides them um and it’s interesting because sometimes I’ll be in a coaching session where somebody’s brought a script and they’ll start reading and I can tell within five to ten seconds that it is is a voiceover practice script you know why that is well a couple couple of reasons number one I started my career by trade I am a commercial copywriter when I was 20 years old that’s how I started my career and I developed that skill became in all humility quite a good copywriter and that skill has served me well throughout my entire career also I recorded over 10 000 paid voiceover projects so I know what a good script looks like and I also know what a not so good and when I say not so good what I mean is it’s not professionally written not that it’s not written well but for its purposes it’s not written well when it comes to script writing um and again my background’s more on the commercial side of things but this does apply at least to a certain degree and also an instructional design so I come from a couple of different areas that feed into the voiceover industry there are certain ways to do things there are certain strategies that are used to produce certain outcomes again whether that’s e-learning or whether that’s or whether that’s commercial work and even probably more so in commercial work than any other area and if you don’t learn to read real Scripts that’s a problem because it’s like learning how let’s say you want to learn how to drive a car but instead I give you a bicycle or a tricycle and I say well learn on this and yeah it’s got wheels and it will get you from point A to point B but a bicycle is not an automobile and a car is not a plane if you don’t learn how to drive a plane or or Pilot a plane learning how to drive a car is not going to teach you everything you need it’s different it’s formatted different it’s laid out different the knobs are different it’s the same with voiceover scripts so by going on one of these sites and grabbing a practice script you could be doing yourself more harm than good because you’re working with scripts that aren’t going to be the kind of scripts that you get in a real live voiceover situation they’re not crafted the same with the same strategies and intent in mind because there are specific ways of doing things for very specific reasons and you want to practice using the real deal so how do you do that well here’s the answer are you ready for me transcribe actual commercials professional commercials written by well-paid professional copywriters how do you do that you quite simply go to YouTube or ispot.tv and find commercials that you have seen on television for major brands that are written Again by well paid well-compensated highly trained professional copywriters that’s where you get them you simply find whether it’s a car commercial whether it’s an appliance commercial doesn’t matter but I would highly advise that it’s a national brand and that the commercial is a well-produced commercial that you can tell a lot of money has gone into because these are going to be the best written scripts that you’ll be able to use to practice and even record your DIY demos for for voice over well now I can hear the wheels turning well wait a second isn’t that illegal well you know it is illegal to take somebody else’s work and then to essentially steal it copy it in its entirety and then sell it for a profit however when you’re using a sample of somebody’s work for demonstration purposes only and you’re not selling that that’s a different story there’s something called fair use now I’m not an attorney and if this is the kind of thing that would keep you awake at night then perhaps you either a shouldn’t do it or B talk to attorney about it and then and then make that decision but as a person who’s been doing this full-time for 17 years and no and have worked with hundreds if not thousands of other voiceover Talent I’ve never known of anyone to have any issue with it if I’m wrong feel free to feel free to correct me in the description below but that is my experience but the the the overriding principle is is this well these are for demo or not you know do what you will but for practice grips it is not illegal for sure to transcribe a commercial and practice it do not go out and find something called a practice script practice real scripts it will serve you well and once you’ve done this long enough you’ll be able to sniff out and smell a non-professionally written script so you’ll be doing yourself a favor when you do this and helping you to progress in your craft as a voice over performer
