i’m a voice actor and here’s how to bring a character to life when I get an audition for a role I will usually get character art a description and some dialogue here’s a mockup that I made with my character from Miraculous Ladybug the magician other times I don’t get any character art here’s what that would look like so usually if casting doesn’t send any art there will be character references so I put Cersei Lannister and Maleficent now let’s play with these evil queen sides here and now sides are industry jargon for a piece of the script used to audition with on top of using your physicality for a character if the character is smiling you should be smiling if the character’s angry you need to show that you’re angry i use my space without creating too much noise now in this script there are no descriptions of what is happening so that shows that casting wants me to imagine it and make my own choices starting with the first line on there it says "Kneel before me i’m using my imagination to picture what my relationship is with the other character I’m speaking to what my distance from them is if it’s only one person I’m talking to if it’s a crowd of people watch how much this line changes if I first imagine that it’s someone I’m speaking to directly in front of me kneel before me but now I’m addressing a crowd kneel before me same with this second line maybe I’m talking to an adviser that I’m mad at all the way across the room know your place beneath my heel and now maybe I’m talking to an ex-lover who is right up in my face know your place beneath my heel those seemingly small choices really bring characters to life another term I’m going to teach you today is pre-life pre-life can be a breath or even an improvd sentence that leads you into your dialogue so going back to this kneel before me line if I had a leadup that pre-life might look something like "No kneel before me." Now that made her look a little bit more desperate didn’t it versus another pre-life choice kneel before me making a strong choice is just the most important thing you can do to bring a character to life let me know what other voiceover tips I can help you
