I’m a voice actor and sometimes in some places and on some devices, my voice is one of the ones you might hear say things like, «Thank you for calling. Please hold or please insert cash or card or power on battery high now connected to your device.» And a lot of people have been commenting on my videos and saying, «Oh my gosh, I thought it was AI. I didn’t know it was a real person.» And I didn’t realize so many people are completely in the dark about how AI voices work. So, I’m going to tell you exactly what AI voices are and how they’re made. A realistic human sounding AI voice is always made from at least one audio sample of an actual human voice. Synthetic voices, like what Stephen Hawking had, don’t sound like actual human voices. So, when I say there’s no such thing as a truly synthetic voice, that’s what I mean. It would be kind of like if you called this a phone, like technically, but not really. And that’s the whole thing with AI. It always needs an initial human model to produce something. So now you might be thinking, okay, but then why does it sound like a robot? That’s from the sentence generation. That’s what’s actually AI. It’s also why when we as voice actors are hired for things like text to speech or automated services, we have to speak in a very clear and even tone. So the technology can string any kind of words together. That means my recording sessions sound like hello, welcome, insert cash or card, 1, 2, 3, and so on and so forth. So when you check out at the grocery store and it says bananas like that, there’s a very good chance that the person had a lot of enthusiasm in their recording at some point. So again, it’s not actually the voice that’s AI, it’s the generation.
