today I am going to flip through and review three books by Andrew Loomis figure-drawing for all it’s worth drying the head in hands and creative illustration Andrew Loomis was an illustrator an artist in the 30s 40s and 50s he was born in 1892 and died in 1959 he studied under George Bregman and he was also an instructor art teacher and these books were out of print for quite a few years they have been reissued by Titan books these are also available in PDF form online that you can download and print so I’m not going to go through the books in too much detail because you can view them online just to let you know these books are very good quality my reason for doing this video is that to let you know the books are worth buying I had printed them in PDF form of course they print out smaller on eight and a half by eleven paper these books are a good size and they are again very good quality so in my opinion they are worth purchasing if you are a fan of Andrew Loomis this book creative illustration it is just chuck full of information I think that any artist can use whether you draw whether you paint whether you do digital art I think much of this book is still very very relevant he goes through a great section on tone on value manipulation there is a section on color there is a section on telling the story visualization dramatization characterization there is a section on camera distortion that is still as relevant today as it was in 1947 later in the book because this book was intended at the time of its publication for professional illustrators commercial astray ters you have to put it into time context of when he worked in the 30s 40s and 50s so the end of the book is a little bit outdated it does cover like outdoor posters a typical assignment calendar advertising so the very end of this book is slightly updated but I think there is enough in this book that any artist would find useful that it is still worth purchasing and worth reading as well moving on to his the other two books I owned by him drying the head in hands and figure drawing for all it’s worth again I’m not going to go through these in a lot of detail because you can’t find them online I don’t know if I already mentioned he worked under George Bridgman Andrew Loomis did so if you are a fan of George Bridgman books I think you will like his work as well he covers different age groups there is a really nice section on hands this page in particular I have found very helpful in learning to draw the hands he goes through female figures it’s a little bit heavy on the male figure but overall I have found his information on proportions on how to measure the figure I have found all of that information very very useful and still very relevant this is figure drawing for all it’s worth it was originally published in 1943 and it goes through all the typical information skull it does cover a little bit on hands a little bit on drapery and clothing it covers again proportions measuring this figure it does get into anatomy I do like even though this is a hand drawn illustration I do like how it’s done I find it very clear and again very relevant today so I think his books are worth the purchase price of the book if you don’t want to just download and print them there are also two more books available from Titan books by Andrew Loomis which I think are also online as PDFs fun with a pencil and successful drawing
